Lesson Nine: The Culture Is the Work

Lesson Nine: Culture Is the Work

Culture is not separate from the business.

It is the business.

At Lucid, culture has never been something we talk about once a year or list on a slide somewhere. It shows up every day—in how we communicate, how we celebrate, how we support each other, how we work through challenges, and how we show up for the people and communities around us.

Over the last ten years, we’ve learned that culture is built in the moments people remember. It’s the big celebrations, the inside jokes (there are a lot of them), and the traditions that make sense only to the people who were there. It’s the way teammates step in when someone needs help, and also the way we make space for hard work and real fun.

Lucid culture is a little bit of everything: high standards, strong relationships, positive communication, silly superstitions, shared wins, and genuine care for the people around us.

It’s car washes.
It’s ube-flavored foods.
It’s shots of Malort.
It’s showing up for each other when the work gets hard.

As Bethany, our CEO, and John, our COO, put it:

“We’ve always believed culture matters as much as the bottom line, because the way people feel at work shapes the way they show up for everything else.”

That belief has shaped Lucid from the inside out.

Culture is not just about making work enjoyable, although we believe that matters too. It’s about creating an environment where people feel connected to each other, to the mission, and to something bigger than their individual role. And when people feel connected, they care differently. They collaborate more openly, they communicate more honestly, they take pride in the work, they genuinely celebrate each other’s wins, and they build the kind of trust that can carry a team through both the best seasons and the hardest ones.

And that culture does not stop at our office doors.

As part of our 10-year celebration, each Lucid team member is taking a day to volunteer with a charity or community organization that matters to them. Because we know we are only as strong as the communities we live and work in.

The same understanding of culture also shapes the way we serve our clients. We know every company has its own rhythm, personality, team dynamics, and way of working. Finding the right person for a role is not just about matching skills to a job description. It’s about understanding the environment they’re stepping into and helping create a match that works long term.

“Culture fit” is not a buzzword to us. It’s the difference between filling a role and finding someone who can truly thrive.

Over the last decade, Lucid’s culture has grown with us. It has stretched across offices, teams, clients, consultants, and communities. It has become one of the clearest reflections of who we are—not just what we do. As we look ahead to the next ten years, we know culture will keep shaping the way we grow.

Because culture is not a side project, it is the work.
